Indian Hymns

In early 2013, Rev. Dr. Douglas Galbraith (left in picture), one of the contributors to CH4 and a well know church musician in Scotland, contacted the CK Singers to ask if we were willing to make a recording of some Indian melodies he had transcribed. The translations of the Gujarati hymns that accompanied the melodies were made by a retired missionary and historian of the Student Christian Movement, Rev. Dr Robin Boyd (right). The hymns were of interest due to the fact that the original (Scottish) missionary author of the words is buried in Edinburgh, but also because Douglas is currently working on a proposed Wild Goose book of songs and hymns written by people in the Iona Community, and hopes that the melodies will be included in this.

Both Douglas and Robin joined us for an evening in June 2013, where we learned the melodies, made adaptations and completed a final recording. Special thanks are due to Steve Richer for expertly coordinating the technical side of the recording of the hymns.
